emergency, late-nite Abstruse Goose post

hello all. carl here, again. take a gander at the new Abstruse Goose (or you could remain happy and just skip it):
(throw up)
this almost makes me throw up right here on my keyboard. This is terrible. This is everything that is wrong with xkcd, copied, in AG's usual way, into even more crappiness. Does anyone think this is funny? Does anyone care about the story? Does the author really think he should be posting "comics" that have to be immediately followed by apologies? fuck that shit, man.

=========
In Other News: Check out Pictures For Sad Children if you haven't already. To be honest, I can't quite tell if he's kidding or not - I hope that tomorrow I go to the comic and it's back to normal, because that is a pretty funny and surreal thing for a comic - especially that comic - to do for a day. April Fool's would have been better, of course, but whatever.

update: Commenter Lint of Death points out that if you click the vertical ad on the page (you'll have to disable AdBlock, if you use that, as I do) it's a little clearer that it's a joke. Well done.

  1. Can you stop reviewing random 13 yr old's comics?

Nobody cares that children can't make remotely good comics.

  2. Yeah, who cares? It's important to note that xkcd sucks because it's extremely popular and influential on internet culture. Does anyone pay any attention to these other random sucky webcomics?

  4. Stupid Abstruse Goose. His apology is even kind of reminiscent of Randall's emo-comics' alt-texts, all bitterly sarcastic and lame.

Anyway about pfsc are you referring to the sponsor business? I think he is serious because he put it in the bloggy section and he has already been putting ads up on his site but I have no idea. On the other hand if you are referring to the comic itself and the subject of lupus I have no idea what to say.

  5. This post is exemplary of the one thing that's wrong whith this site: If you hate it, why read it? Abstruse goose, much as it exaggerates xkcd's suckiness, also exaggerates yours: why read something obscure and bad, then complain about how it's a waste of your time?

I would classify your blog as "a silly and harmless collection of collection of complaints about something nobody's heard of." Entertaining for me to read, though.

  6. @Ditocoaf

" why read something obscure and bad, then complain about how it's a waste of your time?"

"Entertaining for me to read, though."

Perhaps Carl is just a public servant...

Also, he never complained about it being a waste of his time.

  7. The LJS thing at Pictures for Sad Children is a total joke. Try clicking the advertisements and see where they each take you :)

  8. I'm almost positive that the Abstruse Goose is a satire...

  9. Lint: why thank you. AdBlock had successfully stopped me from seeing that second ad (and to be fair, the ad that was not adblocked led to the real site).

Anon: I'd like to think that it was a satire but if so it was very poorly done.

  10. Hot goddamn today's XKCD sucked.
Seriously it was really stupid and almost like that one with the compiling of the code.
Also the haiku was shit and took a while for me to get the close bits you have to read for it to work.
I'd ask to do the thing except I'm shit.

  11. Has anyone here seen Comic JK? The site keeps going down for some reason but it's at comicjk.com when it's up. It is a horrible xkcd-wannabe which makes xkcd look really good by comparison.

Apparently it has at least one reader, too.

  12. Ahahah. I wouldn't have known without Lint's comment for the same reasons Carl didn't know, so thanks. But then today's pfsc would have kind of cleared things up a bit.

  13. Wait, you really thought pfsc was serious? I use an adblocker as well, and could only see the one ad... Sure, it led somewhere on the website, but it leads to an article about, among other things, "Long John Silver’s becoming the first seafood restaurant on Mars." Well, now it leads to an article about the restaurant going out of business, so hopefully it's even more clear.

I suppose I just read pfsc enough to tell that this is completely ridiculous, to the point of being over-the top. I'd say yesterdays was even moreso than today's: "Long John Silvers is an active member of the community"? If you're not familiar with campbell, though, it might not be as obvious?

  14. (Oops, sorry. Long John Silver's is just filing for bankruptcy, not going out of business.)

  15. Yay, I'm e-famous. And e-helpful! :-D

  16. Hahaha, they changed the links on the ads with the new comic. Now it's that bankruptcy one and some "Long John Silver's boogie" that I have yet to watch but INTEND TO. I kind of miss the "Nobody eats at LJS" vid that was there before, though, hehe.

  17. I don't think having a sad or thoughtful comic from time to time is a bad thing, especially not if it's an obscure series. You seem to think a webcomic HAS to have GREAT jokes EVERY strip or it sucks. I would say that well constructed comics that aren't meant to be funny are just as good sometimes, i enjoyed that AG comic because i can relate to it, and it wasn't badly constructed. honestly sometimes you really just need to chill out, no matter you try to justify your unreasonable critiques.

  18. C'mon Carl, the AG strip has a neat little "I know what this looks like" joke in the line underneath. It's out of the author's system.

Now, if the author goes on to make several more "what if" romance stories, you rake that bullshit out here so we can torch it all.

  19. abstruse goose is awesome..that guy picked out the worst one for you all to read...

  20. Well, look, AG started out with a lot of promise, but then it got bad. That's the whole point of this post - that the comic sucks now. If you want to disagree, tell me which new comics you like.
