XKCD SUCKS SUMMER OF MADNESS
Readers! I have crazy news. CRAZY, I SAY! I solicited guest writers a little while ago and got a far larger response than I was expecting. So, rather than have to choose between a bunch of equally anonymous people, I decided "fuck this, let's let them do all my work" and so for the next few weeks we're going to have a new writer every comic. MADNESS ENSUES!
Here's the schedule, if anyone cares:
Comic Date Name
612 ---- 7/20 ---- Person #1
613 ---- 7/22 ---- Fred
614 ---- 7/24 ---- Jake
615 ---- 7/27 ---- Prof. Dr. Silas RP W. III
616 ---- 7/29 ---- JK
617 ---- 7/31 ---- Lompta
618 ---- 8/3 ---- TomR
619 ---- 8/5 ---- Rob <--updated 8/5 ROB HAS ABANDONED ME.
620 ---- 8/7 ---- dragon2041 <--updated 7/20
621 ---- 8/10 ---- Egoraptor
622 ---- 8/12 ---- Hourt Carding
623 ---- 8/14 ---- HateBottles <--updated 7/22
624 ---- 8/17 ---- Asher <--updated 7/22
625 ---- 8/19 ---- John Evans <-- updated 7/28
626 ---- 8/21 ---- Matt <-- updated 7/29
627 ---- 8/24 ---- Thomas \
628 ---- 8/26 ---- Thomas ---> updated 8/18
629 ---- 8/28 ---- Thomas /
All subject, of course, to revision if people are lazy and don't e-mail me posts. If you aren't on the list, it's 'cause you didn't respond to my e-mails.
Is this going to be awesome? Heck yes. It might be a horrible failure. but the one thing we know is...IT WILL BE MADNESS!
PS oh Kate Beaton, i love you so much. That new comic is glorious.
update: looks like the schedule is a little more fluid than I had thought - so I've been moving a few people around. Just so you know.

ReplyDeletecarl way to hook me onto kate beaton
ReplyDeleteif i fall in love with her too i shall have to declare war on you, i hope you know this
I like Egoraptor being capitalized. No biggie though.
ReplyDeleteWait is this the same egoraptor who did the awesome series?
ReplyDeleteIf so thats... well awesome.
what the fuck why is rob in this list WASN'T HE BANNED FROM POSTING ON ACCOUNT OF BEING A TALENTLESS UNFUNNY HACK
ReplyDeleteAh, no Dr.* Horrible there. Looking forward to quality reviews from people who won't pussy out.
ReplyDelete*I bet his degree is fake, too!
Well Person #1 looks like you got a bad Windows joke.
ReplyDeleteThere is more alt text for this one than regular text...
uh also the alt text makes no grammatical sense
ReplyDeleteor am i reading it incorrectly
I think the alt text is in desperate need of punctuation.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, this one wasn't so much a comic as it was an observation offered in a strange way. Also, this fits nicely in the category of randall pretending people are machines.
ReplyDeleteWhich we all decided long ago was pretty stupid.
And still is, if I'm not mistaken.
The important part of the latest xkcd is that it's a simple joke inside one panel. I approve of Randall's method here.
ReplyDeleteI found the latest one funny. It's been a long time since I could say that.
ReplyDeleteWow, that Kate Beaton is pretty good! and then I checked xkcd and lost my good mood, but thanks for the new comic Carl.
ReplyDeleteWait, the Egoraptor?
ReplyDeleteOh and ha ha Windows sux, another classic.
ReplyDeletethat randy knows his audience
ReplyDeleteAmanda
ReplyDeleteif you fall in love with Kate Beaton
post pics
I volunteer for FUCK I don't feel like writing this one, the only thing to say about it is "HAR HAR WINDOWS JOKES" and "HAR HAR PEOPLE LIKE MACHINES"
ReplyDeleteI'll give credit to Randall in that today's comic is mildly amusing and he keeps the joke short without having to explain it, even though the alt-text is retarded and he could have at least drawn a road to signify that the car is going somewhere.
ReplyDeleteIMO six hours would have worked better than six days as well.
I'm sure glad I didn't have to guest post for 612, because Windows jokes are so horribly stale that any criticism of them is also horribly boring.
ReplyDeleteOf course, this probably just means that he'll do a comic about how 'love hertz' or something.
Oh man I didn't see Rob's name on the list at first and I was so disappointed, but then I saw it and I stopped being disappointed and started being excited instead.
ReplyDeleteAlso CAPTCHA: florked. What.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and declare publicly that I think Kate Beaton comics suck. I dislike the art, and the jokes are too weak.
ReplyDeleteTHAT'S RIGHT HATE ME FOR IT.
By the way, I don't see how this latest comic is HUMANS ACT LIKE MACHINES. I assumed he was just looking at the ETA on his in-car navigation thing, and it kept giving wildly different ETA's.
I can totally do this. Probably. Maybe I should talk to Randall and pussy out. Or maybe I should talk to randall and not pussy out.
ReplyDeleteFred, that would sort of make sense if it wasn't for the text below the panel.
ReplyDeleteOh hey, you're right. I kind of misread it as "The windows file copy dialog visits some friends," and I had assumed the 'friends' to be other pieces of software, like sat-nav software and such. Which it then.. contaminated or something, I don't know. I thought it was actually kind of a nice idea, until you pointed out that it's actually the guy acting like that.
ReplyDeleteSo your natural assumption was hot software-on-software action? Good to know.
ReplyDeleteWell, seeing as how Randall made hot hardware-on-hardware action before, it's really not that much of a stretch
ReplyDeleteWHERE IS JAY ON THE LIST
ReplyDeleteI'll give credit to Randall in that today's comic is mildly amusing and he keeps the joke short without having to explain it
ReplyDeleteYeah, the joke itself sucks, but it's presented way, way better than usual. A quick setup, a punchline, no extraneous post-punch dialogue, no telegraphing of the joke. The alt-text is pretty balls, but nobody's perfect.
That's three comics in a row that didn't make me lose hope for humanity! Randy, you get a gold star.
Actually, since the person in the comic is the AUTHOR of the Windows Copy Dialog, it's incorrect (and stupid) to just say it's a "humans acting like machines" joke. The comic suggests exactly the opposite: the Windows time estimation is so bad because its author actually thinks like that. It's not such an otherworldly concept.
ReplyDeleteThe only fault I can see with today's strip is the fact that it should have been done 10 years ago, not TODAY. But, heck, I still laughed.
I thought it would have been a cute joke ten years ago. Though much like angry Apple fans editing laptop hunter ads http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE_LOoEYbF0 to have BSODs on the end, Randall just looks out of touch here.
ReplyDeleteFernie, that's a valid argument - but consider - in real life the author of that dialog does not behave like this. Randall is merely giving an explanation of why Man is acting like machine here, so I think it fits very well in that man/machine category, because even with explanation, it's just a man behaving like a machine.
ReplyDeleteI sent my review to carl a few hours ago, btw.
For once, I am with Fernie. There's a sense in which the joke is about how crappily written that algorithm is, and the joke is imagining the idiot who did it.
ReplyDeleteWait, Egoraptor? Like EGORAPTOR? Like Decline of Video Gaming and Flash artist Egoraptor? Tomical and Anonymous and the WORLD must know!
ReplyDeleteI love her too
ReplyDeletealt text has been fixed.
ReplyDeleteplease edit your comics AND alt texts, randyyyyyyyyy
The alt-text is still missing a comma following the word "if".
ReplyDeleteAlso now that I remember who Egoraptor could very well be, I'm going to have to join the rest in asking if this is, indeed *the* Egoraptor :p
ReplyDelete...And I think my last post just got a C- in comma placement, hehe.
ReplyDeletewhy am i the only one who has no idea what you guys are talking about
ReplyDeleteThe Egoraptor I am aware of makes the "Awesome" series of Flash-animated video game parodies. A recent example, "Gears of Awesome":

Guys this is just an Egoraptor, not the Egoraptor. he has e-mailed me to clarify this.
ReplyDeleteLIFE IS DISAPPOINTING.
Can we please have a guest post by William Montgomery Hughes, IQ 224?
ReplyDeleteNEVER. He has his own silly web-blog for his own silly thoughts. If you care what he has to say, read his drivel there.
ReplyDeleteCarl = William?
ReplyDeleteWho's lazier anymore, Carl or Randall (mirite)?
ReplyDeleteAt least I'm upfront about my laziness...
ReplyDeleteI thought they were the same person.
ReplyDeleteWould anyone like to swap dates?
ReplyDeleteAnything earlier than 8/14 would be good.
