Comic 411: Techno

This is somewhat funny. Still falls into the "I know more about computers that you do ha ha ha" category. And of course, anyone who knows enough about computers to loop a 15 second sample into a longer song probably doesn't pay for music from itunes, but other than that...

Also doesn't itunes give you 30 seconds? Maybe it varies.

  1. meh its a typical old and unfunny nerd joke and sounding like a smug twat as if your music taste is OBVIOUSLY better than other peoples

  2. As a fan of "Techno", I have to say this comic is a perfect example of why xkcd is a bad webcomic full of lazy humour and namedropping.

To start with, the name "techno" is never ever used correctly, and this comic gets it wrong too. You might think this is nitpicking, but it would be like calling everything from The Beatles to Muse to Dragonforce "rock music" because it has a guitar in it. It highlights ignorance on the part of the speaker.

Secondly, the whole "lol techno is just a 20 second loop" joke is as old as the genre itself. People who are into electronic music have been hearing it for decades. This is arguably worse than a comic unironically asking what the deal is with airline peanuts.

Not only is this comic unfunny and unoriginal, it's an insult to the thousands of talented artists making dance/electronic music. I'm sure it wouldn't go down well if he made a comic implying that 3 chords are all you need to write music with a guitar in.

  3. aww, idiots.
i personally like electronic music, but hell, why could'nt i laugh at this?
anyone who's convinced that the mainstream, beat-driven "techno" is more than just an arrangement of some drums, is wrong.
i've heard many people say "techno can be very complicated too!".
    yeah, of course.
but that's not what i like about it.
i don't listen to techno music in a way i listen to classic music.
i don't sit down in my chair and listen to a record.
i listen to it while i'm coding, otherwise working or dancing. because that's what it wants to be.
the joke is old, for sure, but the xkcd-version is the only one i actually like.

and why has this anything to do with "i know more blabla". it doesn't. you're looking for something you can call a flaw, just cause.
i think this isn't one of the greatest xkcd's, and by the way: you can't claim that this wasn't personal.
otherwise, you should name your blog "Webcomis suck" and show all crap around there.
but you don't, because somehow your humor is different and you try to tell people what to find funny.

  4. The best thing about this blog is that you get blokes like Rob who ride in on their white ponies, only to be confronted by a million other unicorns. Also, a ton of guitar music is just a couple of chords.

  5. Wait, wait, wait, who the fuck is this other Rob person and why is he a dumbass? At first I thought Anon was, like, talking about me, and I was going to be all offended, but now I'm just offended there is someone not-me acting like a real person!

    ALSO I WANT A PONY.

  6. Hey mate, we all do. And yeah, I was talking towards the other Rob, without a hyperlink.

  7. "i personally like electronic music, but hell, why could'nt i laugh at this?"

You can. Nobody is stopping you. Doing so just makes it clear you have no experience of this stale and inaccurate joke.

"anyone who's convinced that the mainstream, beat-driven "techno" is more than just an arrangement of some drums, is wrong."

Define techno. I don't think you know what it is, judging by your description.

"i've heard many people say "techno can be very complicated too!"."

I have never heard people say that. I think you made that up.

"yeah, of course. but that's not what i like about it. i don't listen to techno music in a way i listen to classic music. i don't sit down in my chair and listen to a record. i listen to it while I'm coding, otherwise working or dancing. because that's what it wants to be."

No, dude, that's what YOU want it to be. Sometimes I listen to classical music when I'm skating, sometimes techno. Sometimes metal.

All this proves is that YOU like repetitive and simplistic techno, and you only like it when you are working or dancing.

    Go listen to some UR.
