Comics 1020-1022: So It Has Come To This

1020. LOLOLOLOL PENIS

1021. So, on the one hand, I can't tell what the joke is supposed to be here. On the other hand, it doesn't actually bother me. It's a decent pencil sketch and though it fails to capture the murderous look in the eye of every seagull, you know, whatever. Reminiscent of the very early XKCDs, back before he felt like he had to make every comic into . . .

1022. This one isn't abnormally terrible but it is pretty much representative of what XKCD is now. This is something I've seen people say before, and as a genre of joke it's pretty common as well: say something unnecessarily dramatic in response to something mundane as a way to generate humor. Whereas most people will be content with making this joke from time to time, Randy decided, probably after seeing someone use it, to codify it into his comic forever. Randy thinks that mundane, not-really-that-funny ways of being funny are worth putting into comic form and sharing with the world. It's hard not to think that maybe he's not actually trying to be funny here. Maybe he's just trying to hijack a common joke so that every time his fans make a common joke they think of him. Regardless of whether or not he's trying, it works, and it's becoming a problem.

  1. Rob, you wrote this?

It was really sensible, and true.

Also your tone makes it sound like you just give up, like, hey, this terrible webcomic guy still exists, and whatever.

But, you know, you didn't give up by just not posting.

  3. The problem with 1021 is that it's not funny... who cares about the art quality? If I cared about art quality I wouldn't read xkcd.

'I'm gonna go respond to 12 random Facebook statuses with "So...It has come to this" right now!'

    'THIS.

Every day for the rest of my life.'

'I'm definitely going to use this at some point tomorrow or the next day.

"So, hows life been for the past few weeks?"
    "Ummmm......So.It has come to this."'

'I'm disappointed. I want to use this sometime during this period (I'm in web dev) and haven't gotten the chance. Oh well. I'm sure I'll get the chance later. Anyone used it yet?

    3. Maybe I'm the first person here to say it but I find time really boring. I have finished doing hundreds of pieces of work of various lengths and probably started a dozen throughout my life, not including schoolwork.

I find it hard to finish some work without immediately engaging a mindset of, "Here's a consumable that some guy will take from me to lose money and/or load some issues. What comfortable fantasy am I eliminating to enable this?" And that's how my whole sequential experience goes. Time makes no point well which can't be better made with reference to position. It takes me nowhere without giving me the uncomfortable sense that someone thinks that I will already have been there. Time idealises; it romanticises; it preaches. It falls asleep and it dreams. 16. BBC2 Open University programming, Test Card F, Ceefax and a two-tone whistle, jumpers for goalposts... and was 'Allo 'Allo ever really that dirty?

I'm all for reminiscing about the times before Mattel realised that kids shows could be made into extended adverts for merchandise, when network execs hadn't yet realised that the best way of attracting eyeballs was to turn the TV into a mirror with all the difficult bits hidden. And perhaps I should forgive Randy's late arrival at the party - while the foundation for UK broadcasting was public service, for America it's a naughty treat.

But the transmitter network has been privatised as Arqiva, and BBC research handed to Siemens. Post-Hutton, it's no longer Buggers Broadcasting Communism, just a redactor of government and Apple press releases. And an ever-increasing licence fee pays for that fucking BBC THREE.

I blame you, British public. You voted 'em all in. 55 Days in Peking will soon replay as a fortnight in Tooting, and your children will line up at the Foxconn factory building ever wider screen iMacs to suit the Oriental eye.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You are wrong. Because the BBC is paid for by the licence fee not taxes (except BBC world service but that’s being changed) it doesn't reflect the government. In fact, there are justified complaints that it leans too far to the left to be truly neutral but i don't think anyone actually cares.

Also BBC 3 is important in showing the diversity of 'Britishness'. We can't have the world thinking we all like good dramas, subtle comedy and insightful documentaries. They also need to know we watch utter trash such as Coming of Age and Big Fat Gypsy Wedding to truely understand our society. Although i guess channel 4 had that covered...

      Delete
    2. The current state of the BBC is another successful application of divide and conquer. When there was wide variety in politics, few channels to choose from, and the BBC owned a huge research and distribution infrastructure, no one individual government (in cahoots with commercial media) had the balance of power to rein in the BBC. So when Denis made the oft-quoted accusation about leftist bias, he was merely bawwing that they weren't acting as the propaganda arm of the Tory party in a decade where the police were so happy to act as its paramilitary wing.

The BBC was fairly establishment until the '60s, but as Wilson adapted to modern media, so did the BBC adapt to modern politicians: rather than deferring to them, it questioned them. Wilson fared well from this in his first term, badly in his second, yet he didn't blame the messenger. Even Heath, who gave pro-competition EEC/EU law supremacy over Parliament, did not touch the BBC. That took a new sort of authoritarian ideology, not seen before from Tories or Labour.

And now back to the mindless hatred...

That's what "except" means, you dumb bastard. It means all that dark stuff is DIFFERENT. And then she goes along with what he said for no good reason!

  20. Carmen Sandiego is a computer game. It feels to me like basing a comic on its adaptation into a more popular form of media is a violation of Randy's nerd cred. What's next? Randy talks about how much he loves LoTR, but he has no idea who Tom Bombadil is?

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1023 sounds like a conversation between friends at a bar. One person says something like "I wonder what's on PBS this late at night?" And another chimes in with "Probably some game show about Carmen Sandiego." And another pipes up with "Haha, yeah, and the host is probably drunk... blah blah blah". It would probably be funny between those friends, at the bar, at that time, but it is absolutely NOT FUNNY in comic form. In fact, it's incredibly boring. My theory? Randall actually did have a conversation with his friends that went something like this, and it made him laugh so he put it in a comic. The poor guy already spent his two creative ideas (or is it one? zero?) in this life so now he has to do things like this.

Tip: if I was more entertained writing a forum post on xkcdsucks than I was reading your comic, you failed.

It seems to me that many people commenting here are trying to put the comic on a pedestal that it never claims to be on. You seem to claim that the comic fronts to represent a nerd culture that it has actually betrayed - but there is no claim of representation! There is no betrayal! It's like ranting at the Oreo brand because their double-stuffed cookies don't conform to your preferred creme:cookie ratio - completely insane.

It's arrogant to say a creative work sucks just because it doesn't conform to an arbitrary list of requirements that it never even claimed to ascribe to. I'm not saying you can't do it, but your indignation seems fake, as if there is a _hidden_ reason why you actually don't like the comic.

"He seems to claim that this site fronts to represent the betrayal of a nerd culture - but there is no claim of betrayal!"

However, there actually IS a claim of betrayal, as in "selling out". Contrast this with the comic, which only makes the small and accurate claim of association with "science and math".

I find it hard to pick up the post without immediately engaging a mindset of, "Here's a consumable that some cuddlefish has produced to gain attention and/or unload some issues. What comfortable fantasy is he creating to enable this?" And that's how my whole reading experience goes. Anon@10:14 makes no point well which can't be better made with reference to the FAQs. 2. Why does everyone think that victory in competition is the most accurate indication of a pasta's value?

On the Internet, losing a popularity contest makes you some sort of invalid, and everyone likes to go round pointing out when you fail, because they'll be seen a sophisticated.

You think people who get no votes are are idiots? If you actually had any non-idiot friends, you'd know that a lot of intelligent, educated people are unpopular.

From my experience, those who win competitions are mostly unimaginative conformists, appealers to the lowest common denominator, etc.

On the other hand, winning a competition is totally cool: "I'm so brilliant at pastas I get all the votes lololol," when posting a pasta correlates directly with wasted time, and doing it at all serves no intelligible purpose.

    3. Is this contest a joke? I just found this contest randomly, but I am actually a fan of that copypasta. It seems to me that many people commenting here are trying to put the original post on a pedestal that he never claims to be on. You seem to claim that the post fronts to represent a nerd rage culture that it has actually betrayed - but there is no claim of representation! There is no betrayal! It's like ranting at the xkcd comic because the stick figures' heads don't connect to their necks:head-to-neck ratio - completely insane.

It's arrogant to say a post sucks just because it doesn't conform to an arbitrary list of requirements that it never even claimed to ascribe to. I'm not saying you can't do it, but your indignation seems fake, as if there is a _hidden_ reason why you actually don't like the post.

I find it hard to start eating pasta without immediately engaging a mindset of, "Here's a plate of noodles that some Italian guy has produced to make money and/or unload some issues. What comfortable flour is he cooking to enable this?" And that's how my whole eating experience goes. Pasta makes no point well which can't be better made with reference to other staple carbs. It takes me nowhere without giving me the uncomfortable sense that someone thinks this is what I am supposed to eat to be in order to see something false or escape something true. Pasta idealises; it romanticises; it preaches. It falls asleep and it dreams. It is a selfish journey away from a meal.

I don't want to live on the same planet as these people. While prettier than most xkcds, that's totally not even a drawing, is it? It's a photo with some kind of drawify Photoshop filter applied to it. Sorry, but you don't get to rave about the artistic talent it takes to do some simple Photoshop manipulation. 4. 7:37, this reminds me of the fairly tale I just made up for this post in which an anally retentive man with occasional delusional episodes records his daily motions.

On the first day he writes, "One turd."

On the second day he writes, "One turd, formed as the last."

On the third day he writes, "One turd, formed as the last."

This follows for another 1021 days, religiously recorded: "One turd, formed as the last."

On the 1024th day he writes, "One priceless golden egg."

He walks to the Royal Institution in London (lol science reference!), carrying a shit-smeared golden egg. He insists he has magic buttocks and defies any of the eminent scientists of England to prove him wrong.

The ghost of Henry Cavendish (lol geek namedrop!) appears in front of this queer individual and utters, "You just bought an egg at the local market, painted it gold, then smeared it with shit to make it look like it had come out your ass."

"How do you know this?" the broken man utters.

"Because Randy just did it with xkcd #1024," replies zombie Cavendish.

"Implying dead scientists take time out of their afterlife to read xkcd!" shrieks the pathetic psychotic.

"Your allegation is mere PPD," replies Cavendish, vanishing in a puff of good taste.

However, on reading the comic a second time, I notice the caption starts with "For me...", which suggests he is describing his own sad habits, and not trying to pigeon-hole us a la 906.

Secondly, the comic seems to have found its way to Gizmodo, which is just bad.
