Suppose a comic strip in the newspaper had an installment on this topic and mentioned that the characters thought people from other cultures were inferior. Would you laugh that off as "just being a COMIC, for god's sake" or would you be bothered? Remember that comedy can often be the most powerful, lasting vehicle for conveying information to people. Your point that "it's ok to be inaccurate because people can always go look up accurate information if they want" is laughably silly.Carlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01074589998141327538noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-81785675369389602652010-07-21T22:30:42.198-07:002010-07-21T22:30:42.198-07:00ok? other people do. maybe you should learn to pre...ok? other people do. maybe you should learn to pretend to have empathy?rshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15828938843801425383noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-35348886376558412362010-07-21T22:00:22.872-07:002010-07-21T22:00:22.872-07:00Heh. He "perpetuates a widespread myth"...in a COMIC. Since when are comics supposed to be completely FACTUAL? If anything, it's more funny because it's not completely true, like Sesame Street explanations of a lot of things aren't completely true. And that's the joke. It's not ONLY a primitive culture joke, it's also a sesame street joke, because Sesame Street is for little KIDS and HAS to oversimplify things. That's what it's there to do. He's showing what oversimplification looks like when it's done of very simple cultures.
And I don't care about the alt-text, because I would never write such a letter, because it's a COMIC, and I think that people who are THAT pedantic (Such as Randall) not only could use some ribbing but are expecting it.

I thought it was cute. It's nice to see linguistic topics up on the webz to be looked at. Anybody who bothers to look at this and investigate further will discover the fact of a widespread myth anyway. It isn't really that FUNNY, per se, but I don't think it deserves a shitstorm over it either.Leonanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-74111343104585425422010-07-21T20:42:25.764-07:002010-07-21T20:42:25.764-07:00xkcd isn't daily. it comes out on 3/7 of the d...xkcd isn't daily. it comes out on 3/7 of the days of the week. but you should find a new comic, though, they are fun.Carlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01074589998141327538noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-56836985722038501232010-07-20T21:26:22.131-07:002010-07-20T21:26:22.131-07:00I liked XKCD i acknowledged that old jokes were ge...I liked XKCD i acknowledged that old jokes were getting recycled alot but i'm a computer science major so i connected with and found alot of those jokes funny. I must say i'm really lost all interest in XKCD after this comic, i still read it on a daily basis but mroe out of habit than anything else. I'll even acknowledge that cultural anthropology doesn't involve much math, doesn't mean it's not a real degree though I can attest that she didn't get much sleep in college, probably less than me in fact as she had to take a slightly heavier course load and the material was more varied. After reading the argument...(Same poster as 10:51)

After reading the argument about race, I think I should quickly give the anthropologist meaning. Race is primarily meant to be a biological concept; however, anthropologists have determined that it is meaningless as one. Therefore, it is now thought of as a cultural construct with little to no biological meaning, but with great meaning in the social world.

There are races, but these races are completely arbitrary and historically contingent divisions based on old science and the need for justification of practices that are no longer used. Interestingly, race in America is very different than race in Brazil (for example).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-7421226969521247402010-07-15T10:51:05.431-07:002010-07-15T10:51:05.431-07:00I am an anthropologist (social science) and a gene...I am an anthropologist (social science) and a geneticist (hard science) and I am fairly certain that I am a lot more busy and probably more valuable than a electronics physicist.

Randall, I do believe that you have proven yourself a moron.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-22028994369324422472010-07-14T06:13:23.046-07:002010-07-14T06:13:23.046-07:00You know, this comic is smug, condescending, unfun...You know, this comic is smug, condescending, unfunny, and vaguely racist, but look on the bright side: he actually drew the Count, instead of trying to make a stick-figure approximation.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-4347891512388945962010-07-14T05:05:13.376-07:002010-07-14T05:05:13.376-07:00@ Anon 1:11: Yes, linguistics is a subfield of an...@ Anon 1:11: Yes, linguistics is a subfield of anthropology. I'...Anthropologizes ahead of time for my length.
I'll probably look like a tool in the end. Zing?
On to the ramble:
This comic was jarring for me.
I've had brief encounters with "One, two, many" before. I think we can agree that first impressions are that it's meant to be insulting.
For example, the witty RP in DnD with a low-intelligence orc:
The rest of the party had been blinded during a fight and they were relying on the orc's sight to fight.
"How many trogs are there, Grug?"
"One... two... uhm. Many."
The orc's reply was rendered in a very comical orc-sounding voice. It was hilariously witty in context. He's so dumb, he can't count. Hawhaw.
Thus I was at first amused, recollectiong this event and having a GOOMHR moment. I wondered what funny thing could have made the Count so dumb. Then Randy promptly got OOMH completely with his explanation.
Here's how it went:
"The count is so dumb because his culture is primative." What? The connotation on "primitive" these days is mostly pejorative. Most would people associate it with being underdeveloped and probably therefore inferior.
"The count is so dumb because his culture is inferior." That's not a joke. What does Randy mean by culture, maybe that's the joke. Culture could just be synonymous with "a group of people."
"The count is so dumb because his group of people is inferior." I Must be missing something. Probably culture is the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization or group.
"The count is so dumb because the shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes his institution, organization or group are inferior." That's still not much of a joke. I'll apply what makes the count dumb to his whole group.
"Not being able to count means the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization or group are inferior." Oh Randy, you're a genius. That's hilarious.[/sarcasm] This is Randall, I must be missing something. Maybe Randy slipped at the beginning and meant technologically primitive instead of culturally.
"The count is so dumb because his knowledge pretaining to technological advancement is inferior." So a "primitive" "culture" invents TV but still can't count. How'd the get to the TV without being able to count?
Maybe a "culture" with TVs abducts people from a "primitive culture" and they can't learn to count but invent children's shows anyways. Nah, too contrived. And still not funny.
Wait! Maybe Randal is aware that things are not always as they seem and he knows that There's More than One Way of Doing Things (Larry Wall, GOOMH!).That'd be a great Geeky joke! If it's a digital counting system (0->1, 2->1), it could work pretty good for inventing the TV (and computers and everything)! But then it's clear then that they're hardly primitive. But he doesn't have quotes around "primitive" to suggest that he was being ironic. Hrm.
I guess he might mean primitive literally, but still he must have heard of Perl.
"Not being able to count in the same way Randall does means the culture [defined above] is inferior." Huh. What's funny about that? That actually sounds kinda arogant.
Maybe good ol' Randy is intentionally being obtuse. Maybe. Oh, right. Alt text.
..And they're so dumb, they wouldn't know Randy is just kidding trying to perpetuate the myth because he know's were too smart to fall for it.
Isn't it hilarious how brilliant that boy is? *Swoon*[/sarcasm]shrubnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-71962275078606151662010-07-12T21:28:32.677-07:002010-07-12T21:28:32.677-07:00OH SHIT IT'S JULIANOH SHIT IT'S JULIANAnn Apolishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08566528013026340201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-47799118070080146462010-07-12T19:38:25.033-07:002010-07-12T19:38:25.033-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11098332615351188059noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-59785431721529992832010-07-12T18:08:07.076-07:002010-07-12T18:08:07.076-07:00Ramsey: Thanks for the Kate Beaton twitter link.
