I also don't care what he was thinking about when he made this one, or what it means to him.

I also don't care about any other author, musician, visual artist, director, etc, or what they were thinking. It actually puzzles me that this site isn't just about xkcd sucking (which it does), but also about the author sucking (which I don't give a shit about).

That said, my interpretation of this comic wasn't the same as Rob's post. My first impression was that these people didn't talk to each other, and certainly weren't dating. To me, it wasn't about how painful it is to have your significant other away for some amount of time. I saw them as severely isolated people. Maybe having met once, they had a lasting impression on each other. But all that it amounts to is thought. And I didn't think they were actually imagining each other as they were picture, but rather they were pictured wistfully thinking about each other.

I suppose if you can't relate, if you think poorly of the sort of people I described, or if your interpretation just bothers you, you won't like it.

But it was fairly poignant to me, and the effortless stick figure drawings were effective at drawing emotion. And it probably meant something to other people. I don't hold it in any particular esteem. But it's not something that I would say "meh" or "wow, that's retarded" to.aoeuueoahttp://gmail.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-32556478492117376322010-11-16T17:43:51.035-08:002010-11-16T17:43:51.035-08:00Aww, is Mr. Pitchy gone? Pr...This comic is a paradigm shift, and here’s why. Previously, Randy had a blag which he was unable to update with any regularity. He also had a comic which he arbitrarily forces himself to update 3x a week. This created a scenario where, in order to fulfill his arbitrary guidelines, he would post blag-worthy ideas in comic form as Randy Monroe’s Pict-O-Blag, which was recognized by haters but not by Randy himself.

Here, Randy has taken broken down the wall and decided that instead of having a comic and a blag, he would recognize that he could publish his blag as a comic and fulfill his 3x per week quota, ultimately resulting in less work for him. I’m sorry that Randy has a sick family member (something which happens to everybody multiple times in their lives), but mark my words: long after his friend dies and this “ordeal” is over, his comic will continue to have similar “comics” which are not funny and would work word-for-word as a blag.

His family member is about to die, but his blag already has.You Are Welcome (was qwantzux)noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-57227928665989999392010-11-12T16:45:28.782-08:002010-11-12T16:45:28.782-08:00Yeah... Clearly randy doesn't have any sort of autoupdate system, we've had comics come much later than midnight before (up to an hour delay at one point, IIRC), and on a rare occasion earlier (I believe a recent one was posted around 11:30, no?).

Furthermore, the sensation of these comics isn't necessarily that of 'compressed' due to the lack of any sort of similarity between back-to-back comics anywhere. If he were creating a handful in one sitting, there would be some common threads (however faint) present at least somewhere. This is the sort of thing you see in print comics, and professional webcomics - it leads to the creation of story arcs, and some reappearing themes or techniques in a given stretch. It's probable that randy did buffers at one point though, looking at his earlier comics, but the disjointed and haphazard comics of the last year or so suggest otherwise.

And finally, while he probably does write a few which then float around on his hard drive for an indeterminate amount of time, the idea of any sort of schedule flies out the window when you consider randy's repeated refusal to learn the ins and outs of making comics. He refuses to treat xkcd for what it is (his livelihood); he's stated that he prefers to think of it as just doodles for his friends*. That lack of professionalism makes me doubt he has the organization to do something like that.

RE: 818.
I'm slowly coming to grips with the realization that, paradoxically, I'm now emotionally invested in xkcd's continued existence. Yes, it's a piece of shit, and yes if randy refuses to change that it should simply end, but all the same, I've grown to enjoy rubbing elbows with the miserable bastards here among the folds of Rob's endless fat. I hope xkcdsucks continues in some form, if for no other reason that we continue to draw and roast xkcdorks like pitchfork.

*this of course is quite clearly bullshit, because if he doesn't want to acknowledge the existence of his fanbase (or, at least minimize his knowledge of them) out of some form of performance anxiety or desire for 'pure' inspiration, he wouldn't passive-aggressively solicit comfort and flash games from his legions of eager cocksuckers. Game's up, randy.Veshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06095687089196127511noreply@blogger.com
