"in a universe without relativit...@Sepia/Anon

"in a universe without relativity it'd [gps systems] work correctly without correction"

It seems that your argument is that "gps systems could still work even if the universe didn't obey relativity theory." On the other hand you're saying that the proposed application of pseudoscience could not happen if said pseudoscience principle does not exist. Correct me if I'm wrong on this point.

It seems to me that you can still do oil prospecting, still reduce health care costs, still do financial planning, etc. without the use of the pseudo-scientific principles. None of them are fundamental to the application, but would quickly become need to know information if they were discovered to actually work.

I also take issue with the notion that what is needed to overcome the obstacles involved in an application can be decoupled from what is fundamentally necessary. I am reminded of when Maddox of maddox.xmission.com said, "I also have another idea: a car that can fly. I will sue anyone who makes it."

Ideas are a dime a dozen. Figuring out how to actually make the thing work is what's important. A GPS without relativistic correction is about as useful as Da Vinci's helicopter.

"what about antibiotics and evolution?"

I know little to nothing about the science behind antibiotics, so I am not qualified to comment.Arthurhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04837322808525126354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-32524165706253454292010-10-21T09:21:53.364-07:002010-10-21T09:21:53.364-07:00@8:34 after the tyranny of carl there is nowhere t...@8:34 after the tyranny of carl there is nowhere to go but upUndercoverCuddlefishnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-5211666421586732802010-10-21T08:34:17.511-07:002010-10-21T08:34:17.511-07:00I'm hoping your forced misinterpretation of th...I'm hoping your forced misinterpretation of the alt-text doesn't mean you're going downhill just as fast as XKCD did.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-81482744897928641312010-10-21T08:10:21.853-07:002010-10-21T08:10:21.853-07:00Anon@8:57. Thanks for getting my point, and stating it a little more eloquently.

"in a universe without relativity it'd work correctly without correction- BASICALLY relativity is an obsticle/error that has to be overcome/compensated from a design point of view rather than an essential working component"

Exactly what I was trying to say. The basic concept behind GPS just requires an accurate clock and a radio. You don't even need satellites; ground based transmitters could work (albeit poorly).

Arthur: what about antibiotics and evolution? I'm not saying evolutionary theory isn't useful to an antibiotics company, but it's in the form of an "obstacle that has to be overcome rather than an essential working component".

The pseudosciences Randall lists are the essential working component of the proposed applications. If you get into obstacles (assuming pseudosciences worked), people would be using homeopathy to make a killing in water purifiers (so you don't get poisoned by your drinking water), and using remote viewing to make a killing in tinfoil hats (so the CIA can't read your mind).Sepianoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-55975497917463390332010-10-21T06:26:32.103-07:002010-10-21T06:26:32.103-07:00Your mom.Your mom.Randall Muntrollnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6714810984552499396.post-35947364014975512482010-10-21T06:16:03.340-07:002010-10-21T06:16:03.340-07:00@3:14

There is no suitable way to define speeds in a way that doesn't depend on the observer doing the measuring.
